Paying less for accommodation isn't just about finding the lowest nightly rate. It's about choosing the right dates, neighborhood and rate. These are the tricks we use to build our guides.
Be flexible with dates
Holidays, school breaks and big events push room rates way up. If you can, shift your trip a few days earlier or later. In many tourist cities, Sunday to Thursday nights also tend to be cheaper than Friday and Saturday.
Book early, with free cancellation
Lock in a good price as soon as you decide on the trip by choosing a free-cancellation rate. Keep watching: if the price drops or a deal appears, cancel and rebook.
Choose the location before the hotel
A cheap hotel far away can end up costing more once you add ride-hailing fares and lost time. Stay close to public transport or the places you want to visit.
Use the filters to your advantage
On the booking platform, filter by guest rating (8 or higher is usually safe), free cancellation and neighborhood. Then sort by price: you'll only see good options, from cheapest to most expensive.
Read recent reviews
Give more weight to reviews from the last few months and look for comments on cleanliness, noise, neighborhood safety and whether the photos match the room.
Check the final price
Before booking, check the total with fees and taxes. Some platforms show the rate without fees in search results, and the difference only appears at checkout.
Compare breakfast rates
Sometimes the rate with breakfast included costs less than eating out every morning. Do the math for your trip.
Consider hostels with private rooms
Many hostels have private rooms with a bathroom for the price of a basic hotel, and they're often in great locations.
In a group, compare with apartments
For families and groups, an apartment can be cheaper per person and come with a kitchen. Watch out for cleaning fees, which add up on short stays.
Check flight + hotel packages
For some destinations, buying flights and accommodation together is cheaper than separately. Price out both options.
Use loyalty programs
Booking platforms and hotel chains often give discounts to members and frequent guests. Sign in before searching to see the discounted price.
